COVID19 Related Changes and How they Can Impact Your Disability Claim

SSA has not significantly slowed down in their processing of disability cases due to COVID19.  Even when offices are closed, staff is working remotely and reviewing cases. Hearings are being held by phone. For the most part, things are continuing as usual.

However, in one specific area there is a lag. Sometimes, SSA will schedule examinations with their doctors if they cannot obtain enough information using your own doctor’s records. If SSA wants you to have a psychological examination with one of their doctors, they are able to conduct this online with a video call. If it is a physical examination that SSA needs, this may be cancelled or rescheduled if COVID19 cases are high in your specific area.

If you are scheduled for an in-person physical health exam with one of SSA’s contracted doctors, and you have a health condition that puts you at great risk from a COVID19 infection, please write to SSA and cancel the appointment. If you feel comfortable attending the in-person exam, then please attend. In any event, you are the best person to judge the acceptable level of risk to your own health that you are willing to take on.

Take care of yourself and be safe.
